Analytical Techniques

In addition to routine histoloic exams, Stony Brook Oral Pathology offers the following.

Immunofluorescence

For the diagnosis of such lesions as benign mucous membrane pemphigoid, pemphigus vulgaris and lichen planus. Note that formalin should not be used to submit specimens for this test. Please call and request a specimen container with Michel's solution.

Immunhistochemistry

For the diagnosis of salivary gland and soft tissue tumors.

Cytologic Studies

For diagnosis of candidiasis, premalignant or malignant change in epithelium and recurrent herpes. (Call our office to request a thin prep kit. Use the included brush to run the surface five or ten times to get a good sample and then place the brush in the provided container.)
